Zombie Lab Slots
Toxic terrors are on the loose in Octavian Gaming’s Zombie Lab video slot, with a gruesome group of the undead causing mayhem and murder in a secretive laboratory and turning the unfortunate scientists into lab coat-wearing zombies. Only a brave hero with a shotgun can save the day, but as these fearsome creatures can award some of the top payouts in the game, perhaps players will wish he stayed away and just let them get on with it.
Zombie Lab has some realistic graphics, fun animations and a series of bonus rounds that includes free spins with extra wild symbols, exploding wilds and the chance to land some big coin prizes when punters pick zombies to escape from their containers of evil-looking green liquid. Splatterings of gore and goo are guaranteed in this entertaining game that’s going to appeal to horror fans, and like many of the best zombie movies, it comes from an Italian company.
Verona-based Octavian Gaming Solutions has been steadily expanding their range of online and mobile optimised slot games, some of them under their own branding and others, such as the well-known Halloween Fortune, for clients such as Playtech. All of their games have been certified by independent testing labs (hopefully zombie-free ones), to ensure that they are fair, have a good return to player ratios and can be relied upon to give spinners a real chance to collect some great wins.
Come with us, if you dare, to this lethal laboratory and see what scares Octavian Gaming have waiting for us as these horrific hordes try to take over the world.
Gruesome Gameplay
This slot has been given some neat design touches, with the 5 reels and their selectable 5 or 10 paylines set against the darkened background of the lab, where various bits of scientific equipment and cables can be seen. Below each reel is a short candle that looks like it could be used to heat up experiments, but they actually have a special way of heating up the game as we shall see in a bit.
Although playing card icons J, Q, K and A are featured as the lower-value symbols, each has been made to look like an element on the periodic table to fit in with the theme, and like the higher paying scientific instruments such as a microscope, or the characters symbols, you will need to land matching symbols across a payline from the left side to win a prize.
Those characters include the bearded scientist, his beautiful assistant, and the guy with a gun, who looks suitably heroic and is presented in the same very realistic way as the others. The top awards come for landing the characters, but there’s plenty of smaller wins to had when the card symbols land, plus there are several bonus icons that will trigger extra features.
Wild Features and Bonus Games
There’s a standard wild symbol that will be able to substitute for the high card, lab equipment and characters if it stops in the right place to complete a combination. But if one of the candles is at the bottom of the same reel that a Blast Bonus symbol of oxygen bottles is seen on, the bottles explode and turn up to 3 entire reels into extra wilds, which should lead to multiple winning lines being created at once.
If the barrel of blue toxic waste appears on a reel, with a lit candle beneath it, the barrel explodes, and you are awarded a free spins bonus feature. The beautiful assistant is turned into a somewhat less attractive zombie by this unfortunate event, but luckily for us, she becomes an extra wild symbol throughout the free spins, helping to complete even more win-lines.
The bio-hazard symbol triggers a pick-a-zombie game when any 3 or more are seen at once and this takes place in another part of the lab where we see 5 zombies encased in tubes filled with the green liquid. All that’s needed is a click on a tube for it to break open and in a nice animation the zombie escapes from within, shuffling around a bit before revealing a coin award.
Betting on the Apocalypse
Placing a bet is simply a matter of clicking a button, with the range of potential wagers going from just 0.40 per spin, through to a high limit of 20.00. Punters can also choose the Auto mode which gets the reels spinning on their own, stopping the spins when a feature is triggered, or when win/loss limits are reached.
Although you can activate the sound, it’s just a standard series of mechanical noises as the reels spin, so you won’t be able to enjoy the screams of the victims or the groaning noises that all the best zombies seem to make as they go about their grisly business.
Other Horror Themed Slots
Punters who like a bit of gore to their games have plenty of horror and Halloween themed online slots to choose from, with Alaxe in Zombieland being a light-hearted twist on two very different genres. This Genesis Gaming slot sees sweet little Alaxe lost in a graveyard, but once the zombies start to appear, she attacks them with glee. Spinners have lots to be gleeful about when this 5 reel and 25 payline game rewards them with a tea party bonus where free spins and multipliers can be found, while a tombstone bonus game sees Alaxe smashing headstones to uncover prizes.
The 28 Spins Later video slot from Playpearls isn’t related to any zombie movies, but there’s plenty of them filling the 5 reels and 20 lines, along with axes, shotguns, chainsaws and a mushy pink brain. A dismembered hand is the wild symbol, while landing a zombie with a coin in his mouth in any 3 or more places will launch a free spins feature, with up to 40 bonus games playing out. It’s got a comic-book style that suits the theme and a suitably ominous soundtrack plays out in the background, adding to the sense of dread.
A game with Brains?
Top-notch animations and realistic graphics bring the undead to life in the Zombie Lab video slot, while some equally high-quality features should ensure that gamblers brave enough to enter the lab will enjoy their experience with these carnivorous cadavers.
The free spins with extra wild symbols can be especially rewarding and we liked the pick-a-zombie bonus round, as winnings are guaranteed when you choose your corpse. Once the round ends, you will see what the others were worth, so hopefully a good choice was made and you can escape the zombies with the best possible cash prize.
It’s mobile compatible with all the popular platforms, so you can be scaring yourself on Windows, Android and Apple-based smartphones or tablets, and while you can’t practice the game, as there’s no free Zombie Lab video slots mode, it comes with a high return to player ratio, so can be played with the confidence of fair returns.
