The Legend of Unicorn Slot Machine
After playing the Land of Unicorn game, I did wince a little seeing the ‘Legend’ version. Compared to the lavish graphics and animations of the last game, this is an ugly duckling. As far as the game play goes, it is very similar – and like all Viaden games is smooth running and easy to play. If you are playing on a mobile device with a smaller screen, like on an ipad, then I can see why you might choose this game. The one redeeming feature is that you can get 15 free spins with all wins tripled; this can even be retriggered for more free spins.
There is the hint of a forest in the background of the reels, though the symbols themselves are over a plain green coloured background. These are within circles and show the unicorn, a castle, mushroom, raven haired woman and an eagle. The only attractive symbol is the square scatter which has a light effect and a woman looking upwards mysteriously. Many of the symbols are playing cards; these are very plain aces through to nines. There is no real attempt at animation, unless you count the eagle getting slightly bigger and smaller when involved in a win.
In the background is a chilled track, which is pleasant enough if a little non-descript. The Legend of Unicorn is let down by the computer beeps when you spin and wins come in. These are a little 1980’s in feeling, and do not fit with the theme at all.
Only the potential for big wins really saves this slot. The top prize of 9000 coins can be tripled during the free spins game – meaning you can potentially take 27,000 coins from a single spin.
Setup and Play for the Legend of Unicorn
This is the usual 5 / 3 / 9 setup that Viaden use for most of their mobile compatible slots. That is 5 reels, 3 rows of symbols and 9 winning lines (which you can select from). You can choose bets of between 10c and 50c per line, giving a 90c to $4.50c spin range for the full number. There is an auto-spin option, though this is simply start / stop and not the configurable version found on many more up to date Viaden slots.
You want to see the eagle on the reels while you play. This symbol has outsized prizes compared to the others. 5 eagles on a line net you 9000 coins. This symbol is also wild, substituting for everything except the scatter / bonus symbols to make up winning combinations. If a win contains a wild, the prize listed below is doubled.
Regular symbol prizes are topped by the unicorn and the woman; these are worth 750 for 5 without a wild, or 1500 with one. Next comes the castle worth 400 coins for 5, then the mushroom and what could be an eye or a dragon’s claw are both worth 250. The more easily distinguished playing cards make up the smaller wins.
Scatter symbols have 2 qualities. First they can trigger a big prize, up to 500 times you total bet for 5 anywhere on the reels. Second, three or more of these trigger the free spins bonus round.
The Legend of Unicorn – Free Spins Game
There is nothing particularly remarkable about this game other than the boosted pay-outs. You’ll hardly know you are in the game, unless you were manually spinning before it started. All wins are tripled, and that is after the effect of any wilds. This means you can double a win, and then triple the result – leading to a nice boost to your winnings. With the ability to retrigger more spins, this can be a profitable bonus round. There is nothing to tell you that you have finished the bonus, you’ll simply go back to the main game.
The Legend of Unicorn – Conclusion
You’d need to like retro slots and be happy to put up with one with very average graphics to get into this game too far. It really is ugly compared to the newer land of Unicorn game, and since the pay outs are pretty similar I would recommend you play that one instead. The 3x multiplier on the free spins game is perhaps the only redeeming feature.
